Hankook Driver Conrad Grunewald Wins at Formula Drift Round 4: The Gauntlet
WAYNE, N.J., June, 20, 2011 – Hankook driver Conrad Grunewald placed first in the fourth round of the 2011 Formula Drift season this past weekend at Wall Speedway in New Jersey.
The sold out event with over 8000 spectators in attendance saw Grunewald qualify high in the top 5 in his Hankook Chevy Camaro, eventually battling Ryan Tuerck in the Gardella Racing Camaro in the top four. The top four Camaro vs. Camaro match-up ended with Tuerck hitting the wall and Grunewald and the Hankook Chevy Camaro advancing to the finals.
The final battle pitted Grunewald in his Camaro against Formula Drift points leader Justin Pawlak in his Ford Mustang for an American muscle car clash. The race was tight, but Grunewald and the Hankook Chevy Camaro were able to edge out Pawlak, landing Grunewald a first place podium finish.
“I’m really happy for the team,” stated Grunewald. “This speedway requires a lot of tire smoke and vehicle control. My Hankook Ventus R-S3’s provided the edge I needed to win this weekend.”
Hankook’s Ventus R-S3 is an Extreme Performance Summer tire developed for serious sports car, sports coupe and performance sedan enthusiasts looking for race tire-like traction on the street or for use in autocross, drifting or track events. Grunewald’s win puts him in sixth place with 272 points in the overall Formula Drift standings.
Team Need For Speed Remains 5th Place Overall After Formula Drift Round Four
BALTIMORE, Md. (June 20, 2011) – Over the weekend, Team Need for Speed made their way to Wall Speedway for Round Four “The Gauntlet” of Formula Drift. Drivers Matt Powers and Fredric Aasbo were looking to push themselves and their vehicles to the limits on this exciting East Coast track. The course consisted of a quick entry into a 30 degree angled bank, a transition off the bank into the first clipping point, and then a transition back around a figure eight before crossing the finish line. Watch this VIDEO of Team Need for Speed’s breakdown of the course at Wall Speedway.
On Friday, Matt and Fredric both quickly qualified in the top 32, and were gearing up to sign autographs for the fans with the rest of the Formula Drift drivers, when a monstrous storm rolled in over the track. It seemed as if the Need for Speed Electro Lounge got the worst of the wrath, but amazingly was able to be fully restored and back to normal by Saturday’s main event.
The rain stayed away and the sun was shining as the fans rolled into Wall Speedway Saturday, quickly filling up the paddock and the grandstands. People piled into the Need for Speed Electro Lounge all throughout the day to have their chance to play SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED, get a picture with Need for Speed girls Courtney Day and Victoria Mai, rock out to the beats of DJ Miki Taka, or awe at the incredible Team Need for Speed RTR-X that was on display.
2011 Formula DRIFT Round 4: The Gauntlet Results; Conrad Grunewald Wins at Wall Speedway
Long Beach, Calif. June 18, 2011 Formula DRIFT returned to Wall Speedway for Round 4: The Gauntlet. The capacity event was action packed with Conrad Grunewald in the Hankook Tire Chevy Camaro taking the victory. This marked Grunewald’s first victory in Formula DRIFT history and second podium since 2005.
Round 4: The Gauntlet at Wall Speedway was another exciting event where the combination of the banking on the track and the competitive nature of the drivers pushed them to the limits. As a result a few of the vehicles were damaged in competition in dramatic fashion keeping them from advancing to the later rounds. The fans witnessed a true showing of world class drifting.
Despite the brief storm that caused chaos after qualifying on Friday, the Formula DRIFT community pulled together to help one another to put on another great event, said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. Fans came out to fill the capacity of the venue on Saturday to showcase the ever growing sport this season.
