VAUGHN GITTIN JR WINS ROUND 2 OF 2023 FORMULA DRIFT PRO CHAMPIONSHIP IN ATLANTA, HANSEN WINS PROSPEC ROUND 1

Returning to the track where it all began 20 years ago, Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta has always been a special place Formula DRIFT teams and fans. The natural amphitheater created by the purpose-built course plunges up- and downhill, making it unique among the scheduled venues. It’s the only course where drivers start and finish at the same place, providing spectators with an unimpeded view of all the action.

Recognizing the significance of the 20th Anniversary season, a number of key drivers have returned to the series. They would play a decisive role in the Formula DRIFT PRO Championship Round 2: TYPE S Road to the Championship presented by AutoZone. And it would play out in front of the largest crowd in the event’s 20-year history.

Fans were also treated to the opening round of the Link ECU PROSPEC Championship, which brought its own brand of fireworks. As the feeder category for the PRO Championship, this is where future champions cut their teeth and, as always, the Rookie drivers played a significant role.

Despite the threat of rain, the track remained dry throughout qualifying and competition, giving drivers their chance to shine

INTRODUCING THE OUTERZONE: THE OFFICIAL PODCAST OF FORMULA DRIFT

To mark its 20th anniversary, Formula DRIFT is undertaking a number of new initiatives including the launch of The Outerzone: the Official Podcast of Formula DRIFT. It will be hosted by Jacob Gettins who has been a vocal exponent of the drifting community for more than ten years. As the host of the Pistonhead podcast, Jacob interviewed many of the leading drift personalities and will be bringing all his knowledge and experience to The Outerzone.

The Outerzone will create both long-form pre-event podcasts and a post-race interview show. These will feature Formula DRIFT PRO and PROSPEC drivers, FD staffers, and some of the sport’s biggest personalities from across the automotive industry.

In the true spirit of the sport, The Outerzone will cut through the tire smoke and fully immerse fans in the world of Formula DRIFT in its raw state. No scripts, no pre-approved talking points.

“I’m incredibly excited to sit down with drivers of today and yesteryear to ask the questions fans want to know,”Jacob said. “Formula DRIFT has such a rich history and there are so many people eager to be part of it.”

The first episodes will be available from March 1 featuring interviews with personalities including 2022 Champion Fredric Aasbo, Matt Field, Judge Ryan Lanteigne and President of Formula DRIFT, Ryan Sage. Future episodes will take an in-depth look at the Formula DRIFT pre-season, discussing many of the hot topics such as new cars and new faces.

The podcast will be available on all major podcast platforms and through the Formula DRIFT Youtube channel at youtube.com/formuladrift. Head over to formulad.com/podcast now to be notified as soon as the first episodes are available for download. Fans will also be able to sign up for a premium subscription option at a later date, which will allow early access to the episodes.

JONES AND PAWLAK WIN SUPER DRIFT EVENTS DURING ACURA GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH

The annual Super Drift event takes place during the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach; a motorsports festival featuring Indy Car racing, held on the Streets of Long Beach. The roots of Super Drift can be traced back to 2005 when the Grand Prix organizers invited Formula DRIFT to create drift demos around the full street course. The following year, Formula DRIFT worked with the Grand Prix and the City of Long Beach to establish a standalone drift event, which takes place the weekend before the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach and has been a mainstay of the eight-round Formula DRIFT Championship ever since. 

To better represent the Formula DRIFT series, the drift demo evolved into Super Drift in 2012, which has drivers competing in pairs through turns 9-11 for the Grand Prix audience without scoring championship points. Just like an FD event, drivers are eliminated via competition heats until a winner is found. However, the packed weekend schedule means that unlike a full FD event where 32 drivers compete, Super Drift invites eight drivers to create a compressed format.
