The final round of the British Drift Championship was held at Anglesey Circuit/Trac Mon with the stunning Welsh scenery as a backdrop at Anglesey Circuit/Trac Mon. A track layout that was long and fast to test all the BDC drivers and with the weather looking favourable the scene was set for a great finale to the season.
The team arrived and immediately walked the track to see how best to navigate the course layout and began working on setting up the cars ready for Saturdays practice and qualifying sessions. Tyre wear would be high over the weekend so the Achilles tyres for Steve Moore and Ollie Elmore would be used whilst Martin Wonnacott would use his Altenzzo’s which had proved to be the best performing rubber throughout the season for the individual cars.
The first practice session proved demanding for all three Boss drivers, the majority of the field took some time to get used to the track. By the end of the morning they were all were getting close to the judges ideal line but this had taken its toll on the machinery. Ollie’s Nissan Skyline had lost a rear bumper but not caused any other damage, Steve’s Silvia S14 had cracked the exhaust manifold and lost all turbo boost and Martin’s JZX90 Chaser had a broken rear hub assembly.
Everybody involved in the team and some of our friends in the paddock set to repair the cars ready for practice 2, but even with an off track excursion to weld the rear hub only Ollie made it out on track, continuing to improve and dial in the RB powered Skyline.
Qualifying saw all the cars repaired with a huge thanks going to Team MNM for all their help and the drivers drove on track eager for the chance to race in Sundays battles, first up Martin Wonnacott would put in three runs that saw him qualify 28th overall in the Semi Pro class, Ollie would unfortunately narrowly miss out in Pro Class with some stunning runs being put in by the rest of the field and Steve with only 4 practice runs under his belt, would put in an awesome performance and qualified 10th in Super Pro class. 2 of our 3 cars would be in the Sunday Showdown and ready for Battles against Ryan Pothecary in his Nissan S13 for Martin and Gary Dunne in his Nissan 180SX for Steve.
Race day begun with the sun shining on the Anglesey track and perfect conditions for a smokey day ahead with Semi Pro’s heading out first, the crowds had flocked to circuit to see all the action for the BDC finale and lined the pit wall to get the best viewing points. Martins battle against Ryan began with the Toyota Chaser flying round the first corner and straight into the infield in the practice run with the throttle becoming stuck open causing a major issue, this continued into both the lead and chase runs and Ryan progressed to the Top 16 with both drivers charging hard throughout the battles.
The final show piece of the Super Pro battles begun with the top BDC drivers smashing the track, with the speed gun reaching above 80mph through the fast first corner entry and some very close door to door action in every battle. Steve Moore went out for his battles against Gary Dunne and nailed his first judged run to take a small lead into the chase run, the second run began with both cars glued together coming into the final hairpin but the Silvia S14 lost traction and spun just before the clipping point seeing Gary move onto the next stage of battles.
A slightly disappointing end to the 2014 season on track but with 8 points for the team overall the team secured a top ten finish in the overall team championship in our first full season of racing.
The hard work of rebuilding the team’s vehicles and improving then for the 2015 season now begins with the drivers already buying upgrades to make the cars competitive and keep up with the ever increasing horsepower demands the sport is now requiring.
We would look to thank all our sponsors without whom we could not have achieved what we have this season and also all the support given to us from individuals involved behind the scenes which gave up long hours to help us reach our goals for 2014. Also much praise must go to the event organisers at the BDC and the track staff at all the circuits we have visited this year.
Look out for a bigger, better and improved Boss Motorsport for 2015 and keep up to date with all the news via our Facebook, Web page and twitter accounts for all our updates.
