This Saturday, June 13th, signals the second round of the Florida Drift Championship at Palm Beach International Raceway. Everyone knows about Ter-Tech and their rise from a promoting and organizing group of individuals to their involvement today in this event. In conjunction with PBIR and their president Ron Dixon, Round Two will feature everything Round One had and more.
The PBIR road course has at least 6 different layouts ranging from a high speed entrance course, to an intermediate course. The track utilizes the most advanced track surface available and according to Harry of Ter-Tech, it is “[the] best track in the USA, period.” Coming from Harry, this says a lot about the hard work that PBIR has put into this series of events. The surface is smooth and predictable, with Harry admitting that he had entrance speeds of up to 110mph!
Along with the tracks advantages in high speeds and surface conditions, comes the advantage of the safety that will be available to all competitors. Barricades hits are not to be expected with the layouts that will be used, although the expected love taps during tandem drifting are still to be expected.
Along with PBIR’s involvement, Lincoln Technical Institute will also be in attendance at the event. While Ter-Tech has been growing in size and strength, they have been looking for a school to align with in attempts to increase the greatness of the sport. Lincoln Tech, found on Australian Blvd and 45th Street in Riviera Beach, will be exercising their funding and knowledge to create their own drift car and open a special program at Lincoln Tech. This special program will be a window of opportunity to homegrown drifters in the South Florida area as it will focus on drifting specific topics as well as involve the students in the amassing sport. The drift car mentioned will be driven by an enrolled student in the upcoming program.
Chris at Lincoln Tech will be heading the new program with his 25 years of experience in the automotive field. He hopes to get more drifters continuously drifting at all the events while increasing their knowledge of car performance and reliability, increasing the excitement for the athletes and onlookers simultaneously. So be on the lookout for them at the event this Saturday as PBIR will be the home track for the future program.
All drifters are welcomed to this event as their will be a street class as well. All that is required is that your car is street legal and works. You will need to pass basic tech to make sure you car is safe for track use. If you do well enough in the Street Class event, you will be eligible for a Champion License and can be involved in the FDC class the same day permitting you have the safety required of the FDC class.
For the athletes, be there at 8am when the cage opens. The track will be hot from 9am all the way to 5pm. The event will end at 6pm, but PBIR will stay open if you care to try your skill at the strip.
For the audience, I would recommend to appear at around 1pm for some good seats in the bleachers. With PBIR’s involvement in publicity and advertisement, we are expecting a large crowd for the event. Children 11 and younger will be admitted for no cost while the rest of the populace will only be $15 and no parking fees. Remember that this event will be occurring whether the weather will allow it or not save for freak storms.
So come out and watch some awesome sliding and be on the look out for much more to come from Ter-Tech, Lincoln Tech, and especially Palm Beach International Raceway.
