This past weekend Midwest drifters entered the Danger Zone, an old industrial complex, to throw down in an old fashioned grass roots drifting extravaganza. This event was like no event most of you may be used to weather you’ve been to Formula Drift, a pro-am event or even local grass roots events. It was just a few great friends with awesome cars out to have fun on a unique automotive playground.
There had been events at this venue in the past, but this was the first time I had ever been invited. I received a call from an Indianapolis native driver, Stu Kelly, the night before asking if I was available to come play the next day. Seeing as I was going through drift withdrawal after attending my last event, Formula Drift Texas, I cleared my next day’s schedule. Upon arrival the excitement could be felt in the air by the drivers and the few spectators present. We all knew this was our last hurrah of the year and we were sad to see the end, but we knew the day was going to be amazing.
As we walked the course I could see the potential that this location had. The possibilities were endless! So many lines to take, so many obstacles and clipping points, and the backdrop was simply the coolest thing I have ever seen.
As the drivers suited up and got out our expectations were met and exceeded. The speeds were about 70-80 in some spots making it dangerously fun. Bill Cook was happy to chauffeur up to three people at a time in “Fat Girl” his 1jz turbo powered Lexus GS300.
The buildings on the property made for some interesting framing opportunities.
Stu Kelly ripping past one of the many hangars on the property.
After selling his AE86 Corolla Kyle Krebs has switched to a Lexus SC platform. He seems to have settled in pretty nicely.
Kevin Perches Hausberger made it out as well with his rad 240.
Tim Ash was killing it most of the day, even almost taking out an out building, but he got back up and kept slaying tires. He had some sick night runs at the end of the event along with Kyle.
A fun time was had by all involved in the event as the evening was finished off with a few beers, story swapping, and dinner.
We are all counting the days until we return….to the Danger Zone.
