Mohan Back In The Top-16 In Washington
August 15, 2008 (Signal Hill, Calif.) – “We needed this,” was what Kyle Mohan had to say after qualifying was over on Saturday for the fifth round of the Formula Drift Pro Championship at Evergreen Raceway in Monroe, Washington. For the second time this season, Mohan put his Mazdatrix / Cooper Tires Mazda RX-7 into the big show.
Mohan’s car had already felt the effects of the unforgiving barriers of Evergreen Raceway during Friday practice and top-32 qualifying. The impact had done nothing to rattle Mohan; in fact, the impact with the wall had made him more confident that he was capable of putting down a good run in seeded qualifying.
Mohan threw down a 91.58 which was enough to send him to tandem competition against Tanner Foust.
As Mohan and Foust lined up for their first run, the skies began to open up. Not knowing what to expect with the sudden lack of grip, Mohan spun while following Foust exiting the bank, and scored a zero. “It was like driving on ice out there,” said Mohan with a smile. “But I’m sure it was entertaining for the fans!”
Mohan didn’t make it past the first round of tandem competition, but his performance puts Mohan fifteenth in the Castrol Syntec Power Cup Points standings, with 125.50 points.
“We may have a little bit of cosmetic work to do to our Mazda RX-7 but even with the slight damage she performed great. I’m happy we were able to put on a strong performance for all of our sponsors and partners. The car ran strong as always and we’ll be ready for Infineon Raceway next month.”
