Meet Tengku Djan and Mad Mike – Red Bull World Drift Championship Drivers

Posted on October 5, 2008 by George

For the first in our series of introductions to the drivers who are coming for the Formula Drift Red Bull World Championships, we’ve got a profile on Tengku Djan and Mad Mike Whiddett, who earned their invites by standing on the podium along with Ryuji Miki at the Formula D Singapore event. Both drivers are very accomplished in their home land, and both have made the trip to the US before. Read past the break to get the profile on both drivers!!

Name: Tengku Djan Ley
Age: 31
Height: 182CM
Weight: 86KG
Nickname: Tandem Assassin
Home Town: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Team: Team Bridgestone Malaysia
Main Sponsors: Bridgestone / NISMO / Active / DG-5 / SRF
Website: www.princeofdrift.com

Tengku is a Prince in his home land of Malaysia, and has twice before visited the US for the D1 World All-Stars event. In 2006, he passed JR in the Mustang while driving his underpowered 4AG Toyota Corolla, making him an instant crowd favorite. He also gave Yoichi Immamura a run for his money in the RB26-powered ORC 350Z before he was eliminated. This year, Tenkgu has been on a terror, winning Star Drift Challenge exhibition in Malaysia, finishing 2nd in 2 other Star Drift events, and taking 2nd at the FD Singapore exhibition (which earned him his invite). Tenkgu recently finished building and setting up a new 180SX chassis which is pushing 400+hp off of a 2.2L stroked SR and Garrett 3037 turbo. Tengku promises us that the chassis is fully setup and ready for action in Long Beach!

Name:MAD MIKE Whiddett
Nickname: MADMIKE
Age:27
Hometown:Auckland, New Zealand

Hobbies: Freestyle MX, BMX, skateboarding, R/C drifting, airbrushing, playing with my 8 month old boy.
Job / Profession: Signwriter, Graphic designer, Red Bull drifter
Website: www.madmike.co.nz

Car: MAZDA FD RX7
Engine: 26b quad rotor peripheral port
Tires: Goodyear eagle f1
Sponsors: Red Bull, HKS, Goodyear, Kranze by Weds, DC, Castrol, Fusion, TengTools, Tein, Redline Performance, .com racing

Mad Mike first made his impact known at the D1 World All Stars in 2007, making top 16 in his obnoxiously-loud 3-rotor FD. Back home, Mike took a win and 2 other top-4 finishes in the regional STill Vodka Drift series. For 2008, Mike took the top qualifying position before placing 3rd in Singapore alongside Tenkgu Djan and Ryuji Miki. Shortly after the event, he began an extensive reduild of his FD RX7 into a 4-rotor 500-hp naturally-aspirated beast. Mike debuted the overhaul to a 7th place qualifier and his 2nd top-8 finish of the season. The car is sure to turn heads in Long Beach, and we expect the 4-rotor to be louder than his previous eardrum-popping 3-rotor setup.
