As we get ready for Driftcup Round 2 this weekend, we take a look back at Round 1 and let Team 1340’s Andy Stroud tell you how he got on.
I arrived at a very foggy Rockingham Motor Speedway and setup the pits in the outer paddock, I was here representing the team on my own for this event as Adam was competing in Formula G a few miles away at Santa Pod.
During the first hour of the practice session the car felt good, the alignment had been done by Garage D since my last time out in the car and it made a big difference.
The car had too much grip and the short 4.1 ratio diff wasn’t helping with the clutch slip in 3rd and 4th gear. Me and my mechanic, Charlie, set about swapping the diff to a 3.6 ratio and 40 minutes later I was back on track.
The car was transformed and now it performed well with some fast runs, producing plenty of smoke before the end of the practice session.
I went into qualifying confident with the car and grip levels so I played it, not running as fast as I could around the track to ensure that I didn’t run wide on the off camber first corner.
It paid off as I qualified 22nd, my first battle would be again Mark Webb which made me nervous as he had been on form all day.
A quick practice run before the battle and then we lined up with Mark leading first, my clutch slipping on initiation to clip 1 causing me to straighten and reinitiate. Mark pulled a gap and I struggled to close the game over the rest of the track.
We swapped over and I led Mark through the course, putting in a strong run although Mark stayed on my door throughout the run, putting him through to the Top 16.
Mark would go on to take the top spot on the podium, I was happy either way as the car performed well and I know how to improve it for Round 2 at the Adrian Flux Arena, Norfolk.
