- KMR will debut GT Radial Champiro SX2 and HPY tires at Formula Drift Long Beach
- The sound of a three-rotor returns to Formula Drift in the GT Radial / Energy-X / Mazdatrix Mazda RX-8
March 28, 2014 (Signal Hill, Calif.) – The final piece of the 2014 season puzzle for Kyle Mohan Racing has fallen into place as the team has announced that it will partner with GT Radial for the 2014 Formula Drift Pro Championship.
Mohan will also use GT Radial tires during the Motegi Super Drift Challenge during the Long Beach Grand Prix in two weeks’ time.
“I’m really excited to be partnering with GT Radial for the season,” said Mohan. “I want to showcase what the Champiro SX2s and HPYs can do in Formula Drift. Based on the success of the tire around the world, we know that the tire will be competitive here in the States, and it is now up to us to showcase its potential. I’m really looking forward to lining up in Long Beach next weekend with the GT Radial tires on our car.”
Mohan’s team has spent the bulk of the off season rebuilding the Mazda RX-8, which has been reengineered from the front to the back of the car. While that meant the team was busy throughout the winter in the shop, Mohan was equally busy putting the pieces together to compete in the entire Formula Drift season.
After years pushing the development of the 2-rotor, 13B engine with Mazdatrix which made nearly 800hp by the end of last season, Mohan’s car will now feature a 3-rotor, 20B engine.
“It’s safe to say that this has been one of the busiest off-seasons that we have ever had,” said Mohan. “For starters, we had planned to essentially build an all-new car – aside from a couple of pieces, everything in the GT Radial / Energy-X / Mazdatrix Mazda RX-8 has been upgraded to keep up with the pace of development in Formula Drift. Then we had an unexpected development a few weeks ago, but luckily we had the support of several of our longtime partners – Mazdatrix, Energy-X, Exedy, Mazda USA and UTI to name a few. And to have GT Radial decide to come on board with our program means we now have everything we need to have our best Formula Drift season yet.”
The Formula Drift Pro Championship begins next weekend, April 4-5, on the Streets of Long Beach.
