For Immediate Release
September 29th, 2009 (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) – The inauguration of the Brahma Light Drift Track in Santo Domingo opened on September 19, 2009. Located on the former Herrera Airport, the racing course is sponsored by AmBev Dominicana and Brahma.
For the opening, Brahma and in association with CDCD (Club Dominicanos Corredores de Drift), the first drift association in Dominican, brought Professional Drivers Casper Canul and Calvin Wan including their cars which were shipped from California.
“I’m very grateful for the opportunity Brahma, CDCD, and Then Projects to allow me to be a part of drifting history. This is the second time I’ve visited the Dominican Republic and I’m so excited of the opportunities the lay ahead.” – Casper Canul
Casper and Calvin choreographed three demos during the Dominican drifting series. Casper put up lots of smoke which drove the crowd crazy and Calvin drove the Mazda to its limit. Together they made a great combination of personality and skill. They also put on an actual competition between each other to give the crowd a feel of what professional drifting is really like. They also were responsible for track lay out, coaching drivers, vehicle and track safety, and judging criteria.
In conjunction with the inaugural event, popular Puerto Rican hip-hop band Calle 13 performed after the Dominican drift competition. Calle 13 is a five-time Latin Grammy Award and Grammy Award-winning Puerto Rican hiphop and alternative-reggaeton duo. Formed by half-brothers René Pérez Joglar who calls himself Residente (lead singer, writer) and Eduardo José Cabra Martínez who calls himself Visitante.
The event was a huge success thanks to a great venue where professional and amateur drivers were able to show case their skills right in front of the crowd. With the addition of a Latin Grammy Award Calle 13 this was the event of the year in the Dominican Republic.
I want to especially thank Brahma and CDCD for allowing me to show case what I love to do most. Also, to everyone who helped make this event possible and to all my friends that I met, I love you guys!” – Casper Canul
