This weekend, one of the most anticipated drifting events of the season will take place in Atlanta. Formula DRIFT will return to Road Atlanta for Round 2: Road to the Championship. The competition will be spread over two days of drifting action, with the practice and qualifying events taking place on Friday, May 9, and the main event taking place on Saturday, May 10.
Conrad Grunewald, driver of the No. 79 Megan Racing/Top 1 Oil Chevrolet Camaro, is ready to return to the purpose built race course at Road Atlanta. Grunewald will be heading to Atlanta following a 13th place finish at Round 1 in Long Beach, after controversialcontact in the early stages of Top 16 with Fredric Aasbo. The team has high expectations going into Road Atlanta.
“Road Atlanta is one of my favorite tracks,” said Grunewald. “It’s a fast track with great energy, serious drift fans and enthusiasts. It’s always fun to compete here. We are also excited to have our friends from MAHLE out to join us this weekend.”
The competition at Road Atlanta will be held in the Turn 10 complex. Road Atlanta opened in 1970 and was also the home of the inaugural Formula DRIFT event back in 2004. The course is a 2.54-mile, 12-turn track, which hosts several events throughout the year including Formula DRIFT.
“This track has super high-speed entries, and we always set up the car to go backwards here,” mentioned Grunewald. “It’s a ton of fun.”
Conrad Grunewald Racing has launched a photo contest for fans who will attend the competition this weekend. To enter the contest, fans in the paddock on Friday or Saturday can to take a selfie with Conrad’s Camaro and submit it using the hashtag #CGRCamaroSelfie. The winner will be chosen on Monday, May 12 and will win a team prize pack that includes a Hankook t-shirt, Top 1 Oil stickers, a toy car, and a hero card signed by Conrad.
“I’m really excited for this weekend and I wanted to give the fans a way to engage with us at the track and get pumped up as well,” said Grunewald.
The gates will open to the public at 10am on Friday and Saturday. To watch the event live, go to www.formulad.com/live/. The live stream will begin online at 6:45pm EST on Friday, and starts at 2:30pm EST on Saturday
