With a 1000 mile trip for all three Boss Motorsport driver’s the weekend began with the team having high hopes of a good result despite the thought of the imposing Knockhill’s infamous blind entry on the Hill. The three cars were all prepared with various modifications to improve performance and address some of the issues highlighted from round 1 at Lydden Hill.
Saturday morning began with the team ready and eager to compete with final car shakedown down complete the drivers headed of for 1st practice. Martin Wonnacott and Ollie Elmore where up first and instantly were nailing the track which neither had compete on previously, further increasing their confidence for a good result over the weekend.
With Semi Pro practice complete both cars arrived back at the pits with major issues. Martin’s 1JZ powered Toyota Chaser was losing all power in the electrical with the battery being completely flat after 20 minutes practice and Ollie’s RB26 Skyline smoking badly with a suspect turbo issue. The team frantically tried to repair both cars ready for the next session and qualifying. Next up would be Ollie once again after his result at Round 1 gave him the opportunity to qualify in the higher class, but with the turbo issue causing a major problem he got very little track time.
Super Pro class where next out on track and again instantly saw our driver Steve Moore charging hard and hitting all the clipping points the judges had laid out for the competition.
Back in the pits Ollie’s turbo issue was investigated and found to be a terminal failure and Martins alternator was not producing any charge causing both drivers to be very concerned about the imminent qualifying session.
After putting the turbo back onto the Skyline and a battery from one of the race transporters quickly installed in the Chaser both cars headed out on track hoping their cars last the Semi Pro qualifying. At this point the weather deteriated badly with a huge storm hitting turn the track into a river of water. Ollie came out of the session qualifying 16th with Martin missing out narrowly still having major issue with the Chaser.
The team now reinvestigated the turbo issue with the damaged clearly visible the decision was made to try and get a repair that night so the search began to find a local turbo specialist. After searching the web Ollie and Team Principal Martin Moore headed off to Paisley with turbo hoping to arrive back at track with a solution to the problem and after a very long night and the excellent work of Turboz UK both arrived back at 5 a.m. exhausted.
Race day began after very little sleep with Ollie’s turbo being refitted and both Steve and Ollie line up for the qualifying sessions on a dry track. Ollie Skyline seemed to be performing well and he qualified 9th in the Pro Class but Steve failed to qualify due to tyre issues once again causing a huge loss of grip and angle.
All the team hopes now rested on Ollie in the Pro class and with some awesome driving skills, he progressed through to the final against round 1 winner Martin Battye. The two battles in the final were close but with Ollie straightening in one of the runs and Martin not putting a wheel wrong Ollie finished 2nd in the Pro Class for his second podium in two round of the British Drift Championship.
A truly eventful weekend with Martin Wonnacott’s generator catching fire and a blowout on the way back to HQ for Steve Moore’s race transporter to finish the weekend off.
