Long Beach, Calif. January 9, 2014 The Formula DRIFT Asia Championship will return to Australia during the World Time Attack Challenge (WTAC) at Sydney Motorsport Park on October 17 19, 2014. This event will be the finale of the Formula DRIFT Asia Championship season.
“Joining the WTAC to make for a mega international motorsports weekend is a great way for Formula Drift to return to Australia,” said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “We are looking forward to making this a spectacular event and to forge a long term relationship, especially as Formula Drifts international footprint grows and as we make plans for the launch of the Formula Drift World Championship in 2015.”

This will involve an expansion into a 3-day event weekend with WTAC running over Friday and Saturday and Formula DRIFT Asia practice and qualifying to run on Saturday with the main competition to be held on Sunday along with full track demonstrations throughout the weekend.
“This will bring our event to another level altogether,” said Superlap CEO Ian Baker. “Formula D is without question the best professional drift operation in the world today and to have them run alongside World Time Attack will give fans a chance to experience something they will not forget for a long time. We look forward to working with the American based Formula D team to ensure the whole show exceeds everyones expectations. We expect a stellar line up of international superstars.”

Jake Jones: Maybe Headed to Japan as First Aussie D1GP Driver
For the first time, an Australian may compete in the D1GP Japan.
Despite having some extremely talented drivers; no Australian has ever competed in the Japanese drift championship D1GP Japan. In December 2011 Jake “Driftsquid” Jones took a holiday to Tokyo and ended up being invited to drive a Team Orange Drift School car around Ebisu. Soon after he returned to Australia he was offered a drive in the Team Orange Subaru WRX at Round 1 of the 2012 D1GP Japan event known as Tokyo Drift in Odaiba, Japan. So how the hell did this 22 year old from Adelaide score the drive? We’ll let Jake tell the story.

So there I was, sitting in a meeting at the Design Centre in the headquarters of Yokohama Tyres Japan next to Kumakubo-San, the owner of Team Orange. I had no idea what they were all talking about. Then Kumakubo turns to me and says “You should come to Ebisu tomorrow”. I looked at Ian Baker, the CEO of World Time Attack and Hi Octane Racing, and he said “Yeah why not”. With no hesitation I said “Let’s do it. I would love to come and watch”. Kumakubo looks at me and laughed “Watch?” he said smiling, “You’re going to drive!”. Haha alright now this is insane!! I was in Lala Land for the rest of the afternoon. I wanted tomorrow to arrive sooner. Continue reading
