Formula Drift:Round 4 Friday Updates Part 1
This course is very tricky! Several of the drivers had problems figuring out how to run it. It is very modified from the D1GP setup, and very fast. Drivers are hitting nearly 100 mph before getting sideways into a blind lefthand turn. Drivers will then have to transition in front of the judges tower and get near the outside wall for the first outside clipping zone, then in tight on the clipping point in front of the judges tower, and carry their speed out near the wall at the south end of the track in front of the stands before sucking into the clipping point furthest away from the judges. The distance between the 2 inner clipping points is nearly 500 feet, so drivers will have to use all of the track in order to link the 2 points. There is a quick left hand shikane before finishing the course and heading back towards the starting line.
Seigo Yamamoto is in a Black s13 coupe built by BOSO Garage. His RX8 was totaled after the FD:R3 – NJ crash.
JR’s Mustang has a blown motor, the car didn’t even make the trip. At last word he was looking to borrow Forrest Wang’s NOPI Drift S14.5 . We’ll keep you updated!
Ryuji Miki hit the wall very hard in the first practice. He is Top 16, so the Bergenholtz team has until tomorrow to fix it.
Ross Petty’s s13 sucked the throttle body screw into the throttle body and bent some rods in the head. The Boso Garage mechanics took the car back to their Gardena, CA shop last night, repaired the head, and brought the car back today.
Christian Pickering is still getting used to his LHD s13, as his Australian cars have all been RHD, most recently an s15.
Colin Frost and Yoshie Shuyama tapped lightly in practice. Frost’s bumper slid across the track, but both cars appear to be fine.
Alex Pfeiffer took out a bunch of the barriers near the 2nd clip in practice. Alex may be a bit rusty behind the wheel, but he’s been bragging about having working AC in his 180sx to all the drivers.
Sam Hubinette pulled off the course in one of his practice runs on Friday. Word from the pits is a broken axle. He should be back on the course later tonight.
Several top 16 drivers including Ryan Tuerck and Chris Forsberg sat out the top 16 practice session Friday afternoon as they felt the conditions were too different from competition to warrant practicing. Friday afternoon temperatures were right around 100 degrees, while temperatures after 10pm have been much closer to 80 or 90 degrees the past several nights. Since this event is on black asphalt, the surface temperature on the track fluctuates greatly as soon as the sun goes down!
Tony Brakohiapa backed into the wall pretty hard in the final run of unseeded practice. He won’t have much time to fix the car before qualifying!!
Tanner Foust has put down blazing fast runs all weekend! When several of the drivers were having problems linking the entire course in the Thursday practice, Foust was already going faster than anyone else. Foust’s entry speeds on Friday were mostly in the mid 90’s, with his fastest pass clocking 98mph.
