Mohan Wheels His RX-7 To A Second-Straight Top-16
September 19, 2008 (Signal Hill, Calif.) – For the second event in succession, Kyle Mohan and his Mazdatrix / Cooper Tires Mazda RX-7 Turbo ll made an appearance in tandem competition. This time, it was at round six, held at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
Mohan’s RX-7 was strong throughout practice, burning down several sets of Cooper Tires without problem while recording consistently high entry speeds. Practice left Mohan confident that his RX-7 was up to the task of getting into the big show for the third time this season.
Seeded qualifying rolled around Saturday morning, and Mohan threw down a lap good enough to be scored fifth after the first round. Going for even more speed and angle, Mohan would spin in his second run and not improve on his score. Despite that, Mohan was safely in the field and credited with an eventual eleventh place, his best qualifying result of the year. This meant he would line up in the first round against Chris Forsberg’s Nissan 350Z.
With Forsberg leading, Mohan caught Forsberg’s car faster than he anticipated, and straightened out to avoid hitting the Nissan, scoring a zero. In the second run, Mohan spun to a stop at the apex of the teardrop as he fought to pull distance ahead from Forsberg, ending his tandem competition. However, the top-16 appearance was another step in the right direction for Mohan, who still sits fifteenth in the Castrol Syntec Power Cup points standings.
“Your work is cut out for you when you go against someone like Chris Forsberg,” said Mohan. “Our Mazda was fast enough to get in the show, but it just didn’t work out this time.
“We’re fighting hard to stay seeded so getting into the top -16 is vital these last two rounds. Our partners have been extremely supportive of us, and it is important to finish the year on a high note for all of them.”
