2010 TEAM FALKEN TIRE DISCOUNT TIRE NISSAN 240sx S-13 SEASON OUTLOOK

FONTANA, CA – As the 2009 season is now a distant memory, the dawn of the New Year is upon us! 2010 cannot come any sooner for Team Falken Tire Discount Tire driver Daijiro (Dai) Yoshihara. It was a challenging year for Dai, his first with the team, as he strived to find his footing in a new car while working with an all new crew in the ultra-competitive Formula Drift Series. Still, Dai’s talent and experience shined through in the end with back-to-back top 16’s in Round 6 & 7 and a 6th place finish in the season-ending event at Irwindale. Despite his early season struggles, Dai managed to finish 11th place overall in the final standings, a true testament to his poise, competitiveness and drifting skills.

Returning for a 4th season with the Falken Tire Discount Tire team is crew-chief and car builder, Scott Dodgion of SPD Metal Works in Anaheim, CA. While new body styling and a set of new wheels will improve the appearance of the brilliant red and white machine, engine upgrades and modifications look to push the 6.0 liter, LS-2 V8 power-plant over 650 horsepower! A new gear set-up in the rear-end will help Dai negotiate his drift runs with more predictability and improve the overall performance of the Discount Tire-clad drift machine!

Daijiro Yoshihara’s Drift Report…

Formula Drift – Infineon Raceway, Sonoma, CA
After a disheartening crash during round 5 of the Formula D series in Seattle, it seemed as though Dai’s 2009 drifting season would come to an end. Qualified 5th overall, Dai and the Falken Tire/Discount Tire Lexus IS350 were looking better than ever. During the final practice before the Top 32 competition, the IS350 ran into the wall at the first bank of the drift course that damaged the car beyond repair. Fortunately, Dai walked away from the crash with only a sore neck and no other major complications.

With only 2 weeks separating round 5 and 6, Falken Tire was quick to make the decision of rebuilding a car for competition so that Dai could compete and complete the season. They decided to use a car from the previous season, a Nissan 240SX S13 that Ross Petty had competed in. With only 9 days of build time, SPD Metal Works was quick to the job and began the build process immediately. “We just focused at the task at hand and grinded it out until the car was complete,” explained Scott Dodgion of SPD Metal Works and crew chief for Dai.

2009 Formula D – Atlanta Event Report

With the weather forecasted for rain in Braselton, GA during round 2 of the Formula Drift series, the newly built Falken Tire/Discount Tire Lexus IS350 piloted by Daijiro Yoshihara was going to be a challenge. This was especially the case since he was drifting in Road Atlanta Speedway, one of the most technically challenging courses in the series.

Practice sessions provided Daijiro more time to adjust to the Lexus before competition. Due to a new build for 2009, the Lexus was still not 100% ready for competition. “The car has a small window of drivability,” explains Daijiro. “If I can drive the car in that window, then I’m ok. If not, I have to work harder to make the car drift.”
