On Saturday December 8, Red Bull Drift Shifters will transform Victoria Street, Auckland into a giant pinball inspired drift track.
Motorsport fans will be treated to a totally new style of racing that will test driver’s skills to the limit, thrilling the crowds with tight turns and drifts through pinball inspired obstacles.
When the smoke and rubber clears on Victoria Street in Auckland city on Saturday December 8th one driver will reign supreme as the new Red Bull Drift Shifters Champion. He will have beaten 11 other competitors from around the world in the ultimate test of drift driving skills. The competitions race track can only be described as a giant drift and pinball game hybrid.
Just like its pin ball counterpart Red Bull Drift Shifters is a race to create the highest score. Drivers will race one at a time collecting points from clipping obstacles, speed through sections and style points from the judges. The driver’s points will display on a giant scoreboard at the top of the course just like a pinball game.
Drift Shifters is the brainchild of Mike Whiddett, arguably New Zealand’s best known and most talented drift driver. In his professional career Mike has travelled the world, racing in many top motorsport locations, but nothing that will come close to Red Bull Drift Shifters.
“I have always had the dream of bringing a drift event into the CBD. In New Zealand our competitions are really limited to existing race tracks. I wanted to create something new, exciting and different” says Mike
Different and exciting is exactly what the Drift Shifters track will aim to deliver. It will be packed with combinations of tight turns, clipping points, speed tunnel runs, sweeping corners, transition drifts under sea containers and a final 180 turn into a tight car park. This will keep competitors hands firmly on the wheel if they have any hope of taking out the title.
“I really wanted to build a course that would show the true skill of a driver and the ability they have to control the car in tight and varied situations in a short amount of time” comments Mike Whiddett.
The competition format is fast and tight with12 drivers starting, reduced to the eight top scorers after the qualifying round, then down to four in the semi-final. The top two drivers will battle it out in the grand final. Red Bull Drift Shifters – a totally new way to race.
