AASBO RETURNS TO FORM WITH 2019 FORMULA DRIFT PRO CATEGORY WIN AT ROAD ATLANTA, ROBINSON WINS PRO 2

Posted on May 14, 2019 by Toxic

As the 2019 Formula DRIFT season marches on, the teams arrived at Road Atlanta this weekend for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Road to the Championship presented by Permatex. It would see Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis defend his early lead in the Formula DRIFT Black Magic Pro Championship after wins in the first two rounds. Trenton Beechum would also attempt to defend his lead in the Formula DRIFT Link ECU Pro 2 Championship. However, both would be disappointed as new faces climbed on the top step of the podium.

For the Pro Category, rain showers brought an additional challenge to the competition heats but the capacity crowd witnessed exceptional skill as the drivers went wheel-to-wheel on the challenging Road Atlanta course.

Posted on July 24, 2018 by Toxic

Returning from the summer break, the 2018 Formula DRIFT Black Magic Pro Championship headed to Seattle, WA for Round Five: Autozone Throwdown presented by Rain-X. With the first half of the season over, and one of the most competitive driver line ups ever seen in the sport, it is time for teams to make a push to the Finals at Irwindale Speedway in October. And with only 39 points separating the top three places, there is still everything to play for.

As the event got underway, Formula DRIFT was delighted to announce it had signed a new three-year deal with the operators of Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA. This has secured the future of FD Seattle at the venue it has used successfully since 2005. “We’re so excited to have signed this three-year deal,” said Jim Liaw, Formula DRIFT president. “Our entire organization, the teams and fans love coming here. There’s always tremendous energy in the grandstands and the paddock, which gives the event its own special personality.”

Formula DRIFT Round 4 The Gauntlet Results;
Fredric Aasbo is Victorious

Long Beach, Calif. – June 28, 2015 – Formula DRIFT presented by GoPro returned to Wall Speedway in Wall Township, New Jersey for Round 4: The Gauntlet. Fredric Aasbo in the Rockstar Energy Drink / Hankook Scion tC takes the victory and moves into third place in the standings.

Round 4: The Gauntlet saw challenging conditions due to the inclement weather. The varying dry and wet conditions on the track, through the event, created an additional element that the drivers had to overcome in order to advance through the rounds of competition. The action was competitive with many close battles. 300,000 fans tuned in through the event weekend on the Driftstream.

“As we approach the halfway point of the season we are in the tightest race for the championship with only 7 points separating the top three drivers,” said Jim Liaw, President of Formula DRIFT. “With only three events remaining in the season, the championship is still up for grabs. We expect the championship to come down to the wire in one of the most exciting seasons to date.”

The semi-finals saw Ryan Tuerck in the Retaks / Maxxis / Nameless Performance Scion FR-S battle it out against Dean Kearney in the Oracle Lighting / Achilles Motorsports Dodge Viper. Kearney edged out Tuerck to advance to the Finals. Fredric Aasbo faced off against Masashi Yokoi and after a close battle, Aasbo took the victory to face Kearney. Consistency in the wet condition proved to be the deciding factor for Aasbo as he was able to take his second consecutive victory at Wall Speedway moving into third place in the chase for the championship only 7 points behind the leader. Tuerck with his third place finish rises to the top of the standings by a mere point over Aurimas Bakchis in second place.

“What an amazing win! We are back in the hunt for the championship and I couldn’t be happier,” said Fredric Aasbo, winner of Round 4: The Gauntlet. “Big thanks to Rockstar Energy Drink, Scion Racing, and of course Hankook Tire on their home turf. I think we were able to prove our extreme prowess in the rain.”

Gardella Racing: Final Battle of 2011

Posted on October 18, 2011 by George

October 14, 2011 (Howell, NJ) Round 7: Title Fight, goes down in the record books as the best event Formula Drift has ever put on. There was not only an amazing fight for the championship, the driving was fierce and the crowd was sold out. The fans were so loud; it was reminiscent of a college football game. Team owner, Gary Gardella reflects about this epic event, “Looking up into the crowed and seeing the excitement and glow on everyone’s face gave me the best feeling. I am sure all of the people that are involved with the series felt the same way; it was awesome.”

Each battle starting with the top 32 was extraordinary. All of the drivers drove their hearts out to try to make it to the top of the podium. Adding to the excitement for the fans was all of the unexpected crashes along the way. Some of the top drivers were driving so aggressive they were on that fine edge, which is just unbelievably amazing. Some of the crashes or mishaps came from top drivers such as Samuel Hubinette, Chris Forsberg, and Justin Pawlak, to name of a few.

The championship battle was so tight that in the beginning of the final 4, the title could have gone to 4 different drivers; Darren McNamara, Justin Pawlak, Dia Yoshihara and Chris Forsberg. After it was all said and done Dia Yoshihara came away with the 2011 Formula Drift championship.
