Tanner Foust Slides the Rockstar Energy Scion tC to Victory at Round 4 of the Formula DRIFT Series in Las Vegas
TORRANCE, Calif. (July 14, 2009) – Scion-supported Formula DRIFT driver Tanner Foust, who debuted the Papadakis Racing-built Rockstar Energy Drink Scion tC at the season opener with a third place victory, jumped onto the Formula DRIFT podium’s top spot scoring a victory this past weekend at Round 4 in Las Vegas.
“The Rockstar team and I went from zero to hero after failing to qualify for the main competition last event,” said Formula DRIFT champion Tanner Foust. “I am so proud of my team. They worked hard to fix the issues of the Rockstar Scion tC, and I now feel comfortable and feel that this car has more potential than it’s ever had.”

ERIC O SULLIVAN TO COMPETE IN FORMULA DRIFT SERIES WITH ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINKS AND HANKOOK TIRES
Former Prodrift Series Champion and current JDM Allstars Triple Crown Series Champion Eric O Sullivan has announced plans to compete in Formula Drift series in the United States for the 2009 season. Eric will be joining Robbie Nishida at the Dynamic Autosports/Gruppe S Team in a 2007 Subaru Impreza STI for the 7-round series, which commences April 11th-12th on the Streets of Long Beach, California.
After witnessing a monumental performance at the World Drift Championship event in Long Beach last November, Eric’s title sponsors Rockstar Energy Drink and Hankook Tires will be helping him to achieve his goal of challenging some of the best drifting talent in the World for the championship. O’Sullivan earned his bid to the invite-only World Championships through his 2007 series championship in the Irish Pro Drift series, Prodrift European Series 3rd place overall and added a JDM All Stars Triple Crown championship to his resume in 2008. O’Sullivan drove his Honda F20-powered AE86 Corolla in the competition, and was able to claim a respectable 15th-place qualification despite being the lowest-powered car in the field. Tanner’s Scion tC to be powered by Nascar V8
When we first debuted Tanner’s tC, the powerplant was yet-to-be-named, although we had heard rumors of the NASCAR powerplant. On the Inside Drift podcast last week and this week in an interview with Scion, Foust confirmed the powerplant, stating that they would be moving away from the turbocharged motors he has become accustomed to in drifting and will be using one of Toyota’s NASCAR V8 powerplants. These motors run 358 cubic inches and put out well over 600 horses to the rear wheels in NASCAR form, although drifting doesn’t have the same restrictions that NASCAR places on their cars. As more information is revealed, we’ll bring it to you first!
On a side note, Tanner will be on Hankook tires for the 2009 season. We expect him to be on either the RS-2 Z212, which has been a hugely-innovative tire for Hankook, or the newly-announced RS-3 Z222 tire which was announced at this year’s SEMA show.
Here is the initial rendering which was released back in October – an updated rendering with the Hankook logos hasn’t been distributed as of yet.
Tanner Foust to Drive Scion tC in 2009
We’ve gotten the inside scoop on Tanner Foust’s new ride for 2009, and it will be very different from the Nissan 350Z which he has piloted to back-to-back championships. Tanner will continue to drive for Rockstar, AEM, and Toyo Tires, but Papadakis Racing will be preparing a brand new 2009 Scion tC for Foust. Much like Ken Gushi’s tC, Papadakis Racing will be converting the car to RWD along with performing substantial chassis and drivetrain modifications to prep the car. With Foust’s extensive experience behind the wheel, and the AEM / Papadakis Racing minds behind the chassis prep and fabrication, this car should be competitive in no time!
We’ve been provided with a rendering of the car, and are very excited to see it sideways!
