Update: Sun Sets On House of Drift… Toyota Speedway Closing Or Is It?
Update 2/14/2012: So as thought, Toyota has seemed to pull it’s naming rights on the track and left Toyota Speedway back to Irwindale Speedway. Their sponsorship was not renewed by choice at this time. From what we have gathered, the managing staff and owners ended up having some kind of fallout and are now gone, leaving the track in a change of management position. What that means is that all is just changing hands and still being worked out. The 2012 schedule is gone for NASCAR as well, but that’s neither here or there. You should see Round 7 of Formula Drift slated to run at the end of it’s season. How this affects the upcoming XDC event is still in the works as they start their season in March at Irwindale and more details are still to come.
The house of drift is closing? From what we gathered off the Daily News and from the official Toyota Speedway website(which is now offline). It seems as though that just may be happening. We tried to reach out ourselves to any contacts we can over there and we haven’t gotten a response, Just Voicemail boxes. So as the title states, this might really be the Sun Setting on the House of Drift or is it? According to Wrecked Magazine, the only major changes going on is Toyota has pulled out from the track leaving the track back to it’s formal name of “Irwindale Speedway”. Also that this basically will affect the NASCAR Program only, which we already knew Irwindale hosts several other items as in TV shows and Commercials. So the only change that might be going on are a name change and staff changes which happens every so often everywhere else in the world today.
Exert From Daily News:
Irwindale Speedway appears to be closing
Venue known for short track racing reportedly goes out of business.
By Keith Lair Staff Writer
Irwindale Speedway, considered by many to host the finest short track racing in the nation, appears to be history.
On Saturday, workers appeared to be closing down the facility, which has had the biggest NASCAR short track races on the West Coast for more than a decade.
Workers were dismantling the pit grandstand, which is adjacent to the first turn. They were also taking apart storage areas. The large billboard bordering the San Gabriel Valley River Freeway was not lit up for the first time in its history, barring power outages, and the track’s website was taken off the Internet.
“They went out of business,” said a prominent Irwindale racer who did not want to be identified.
Vice president and general manager Bob DeFazio and some staff members were in the locked administration building Saturday morning, a moving truck backed up to the office’s side entrance and a moving box stacked outside. DeFazio, through track operations director Bob Klein, refused to comment. Klein would only say an announcement would be made Monday.
