Nostalgic Sunday: Team X – 2005

The EverythingDrift.comThe EverythingDrift.com staff got the opportunity to do an exclusive interview with “Team X” while out at Irwindale Speedway for the Formula D Finals. We got to get down and dirty with the Team X drivers Tyson Beckford and Tony Brakohiapa.

EverythingDrift.com: What got you interested in drifting?
Tyson Beckford: The whole drifting thing started with me just being a kid, having mom’s Toyota and just goin all out years ago. I didn’t have any idea what I was doing at the time, I just loved it. Then watching some of the stunt driving in movies and commercials, not knowing at the time that Rhys Millen (and several of the other drifters) were the ones actually doing that stuff, I really got into it. I started watching Japanese TV and DVD’s, and saw these guys doing crazy things down city streets, going sideways in their cars, and I thought “hey, I want to do that!” I bought a 350Z and hit up my boys who had video cameras, and they started filming me, but then they got into it too. I ended up hooking up with Dele our team manager and he asked me to be on the team. This was in fall of last year. We went to SEMA with Team X, and checked out everything there. After SEMA, I went to Panos race school, took their classes, graduated pretty top in their class, and we decided to start the drift team. We got on it, and next thing you know, this is it.

2014 was indeed a success for Vaughn Gittin Jr. and the RTR Drift Team. With over 30 events on the roster, there was always something new and exciting for supporters and fans to relish in. The following is a recap of all the awesome that went into 2014. Enjoy the awesome and thanks for your support from Vaughn and his team!

“2014 was a pretty awesome year for us,” says Vaughn Gittin Jr. “I traveled the world and got crazy in my Ford Mustang RTR. We won two events back-to-back and finished 3rd overall in Formula Drift, I won my first entry in King of Europe Drift, and was able to put smiles on many faces while I did what I love! A sincere thank you for all of your support, let’s party 2015!”

Ford Mustang Teams Gear Up for Final Fight of 2014 Formula DRIFT Season at Irwindale Speedway

• Along with former champion Gittin Jr., past winner and Mustang driver Justin Pawlak also competing

• Ford will announce “Drift with Ford” sweepstakes winner of custom EcoBoost®-powered Fiesta ST after final 2014 Formula DRIFT event

Long Beach, Calif. – September 23, 2014 – With only one race left in the 2014 Formula DRIFT season, Ford Motor Company heads to Irwindale Speedway in California looking to finish strong in the season finale there. Vaughn Gittin Jr., in third place, and Justin Pawlak, in seventh, will compete in customized Ford Mustangs Oct. 10-11, in the final fight of the seven-event series.

“I’m really pumped to be heading into the final fight of 2014 at Irwindale Speedway,” said Gittin Jr. “While we are no longer battling for the championship, we plan to hold our ground and take third overall in the series.”

“This is something I’m really excited about, given the challenges we had to overcome this season,” he added. “The progression of drifting never ceases to amaze me, and this year has been insane with regard to the level of competition. Our Ford Mustang RTR has been fully up to the task and continues to be a performance bar-setting machine, round after round. We are looking forward to fighting hard and ending the season on the top step.”

Formula DRIFT Speeds into Texas with Ford Mustang Teams in Contention for 2014 Championship

Long Beach, Calif. – September 4, 2014 – With just two races left in the 2014 Formula DRIFT season, Ford Motor Company heads to Texas Motor Speedway looking to regain the lead in the Formula DRIFT manufacturer’s cup standings. Vaughn Gittin Jr. in third place and Justin Pawlak, sixth will compete in customized Ford Mustangs in Fort Worth, Texas, Sept. 12-13, in round six of the seven-event series. 

Ford has supported drivers in Formula DRIFT since 2005, when the sport triggered a successful Ford Racing Performance Parts engine development program for a supercharged 4.6-liter V8 crate engine.
